Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs

Office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs

The Office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs coordinates the activity between the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego and Christians of other churches and communions, and the non-Christian community of San Diego. The Office also helps to further the many, individual ministerial or local ecumenical associations in which the Catholic priests, deacons and lay people are involved.

Christian Unity in Action: Responding to Immigrant Youth in Need

On June 8, 2022, The Lutheran/Anglican/Roman Catholic Dialogue of San Diego hosted a live and virtual panel entitled “Christian Unity in Action: Responding to Immigrant Youth in Need,” which reflected on the ecumenical response to the thousands of immigrant youth briefly held last year at the San Diego Convention Center. Participating in the panel and reflecting on their participation in ministering to the youth were Bishop Andy Tayler (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Pacifica Synod), Bishop Ramon Bejarano (Auxiliary Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego), Bishop Susan Snook (Episcopal Diocese of San Diego). Approximately 150 participated in the evening event, either in person or online. This is a positive outcome of our years of dialogue with our ecumenical partners in showing the growth of unity in the Church.

August 4, 2022

Dear Friends:

Along with this letter is an order form for the materials from the upcoming year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, January 18 – 25, 2023, which can be obtained from the Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Institute.  They really have done all the work and planning for us.  It’s just up to us to implement it in our own communities.

As you know, this is the one week of the year when the ecumenical work of the Church is raised up for particular attention.  Now, more than ever, the ecumenical ministry of the Church is vital to the proclamation of the gospel to our world.  I am passing this on to you with the hope it will be of use to you in your parish.

We can be proud of the ecumenical/Interreligious work being done in our Diocese.  So much of what is happening is being done quietly but persistently on the part of our parishes.  For that, the whole Church is grateful.  This is not an easy ministry but one which, done under the guidance and protection of the Holy Spirit, will bear much fruit for the Church in the world.

Thank you for your work in ecumenism.  If I can ever be of assistance to you please do not hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,

Very Rev. Msgr. Dennis L. Mikulanis, S.T.D.
Vicar for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs
