World Youth Day is a gathering of young Catholics from across the world that happens every two to three years. It is an opportunity to meet the Pope, to celebrate and participate in the expression of the universal Church, and to give a witness of evangelization to the world.
The first World Youth Day took place in Rome in 1986. There have been 15 “WYDs” since then, and 2023 will mark 37 years of this international gathering. It will take place from August 1 to 6 in Lisbon, Portugal.
Each WYD focuses on a theme that the Holy Father invites young people to consider and embody. Next year’s theme is based on Luke 1:39, “Mary rose and went with haste.” The Pope’s hope is that “young people’s evangelization be active and missionary, for this is how they will recognize and witness the presence of the living Christ.”
With a mix of open-air Masses with millions of other young Catholics, amazing catechesis, cultural experiences, and an authentic celebration of a youthful Catholic Church, this is a pilgrimage not to be missed.
If you will be age 21 to 39 by August 2023, you are welcome to join the Diocese of San Diego’s World Youth Day delegation to Portugal to greet our Pope and celebrate with like-minded young adults.
