Cardinal McElroy’s Statement Following the Death of Pope Emeritus Benedict
(SAN DIEGO, Dec. 31, 2022) — Cardinal Robert W. McElroy of the Catholic Diocese of San Diego issued the following statement today following the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI on Dec. 31.
“Pope Benedict’s death is a moment of both sadness and gratitude. In faith we know that he is going to the loving embrace of God, whom he has served with sacrifice and courage, brilliance and wisdom, humility and kindness throughout his life.
“He was a theologian of exhaustive knowledge, a loving pastor and a pious servant who always sought to follow the path to which God called him.
“By loving Jesus Christ, she brought grace to the Church and ennobled our world.”
