Celebrating 100 Years of Mission
World Mission Sunday 2026 holds a special place in the life of the Church as Catholics around the world celebrate the 100th anniversary of World Mission Sunday. Established by Pope Pius XI in 1926 at the request of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, this annual observance has united generations of Catholics in prayer, sacrifice, and generosity for the Church’s missionary work.
For a century, World Mission Sunday has supported the proclamation of the Gospel in mission territories and strengthened local Churches where the faith is newly planted and steadily growing. This year, Catholics throughout the world will celebrate World Mission Sunday on October 17-18, 2026.
“One in Christ, United in Mission”
For this historic centennial celebration, Pope Leo XIV has chosen the theme: “One in Christ, United in Mission.”
In his message for the 100th World Mission Day, the Holy Father calls the Church to continue its missionary journey with renewed joy, zeal, and hope. He reminds us that authentic missionary activity flows from our union with Christ and our communion with one another.
Mission is not the responsibility of a select few. Rather, it is the vocation of every baptized Christian who shares in the Church’s mission to proclaim the Gospel to all nations.
