Bishop McElroy begins implementation of Pope Francis’ directive on proper use of the Pre-Vatican II Latin Mass

Today (August 2, 2021), Bishop McElroy released a letter to the faithful explaining how the diocese would implement Pope Francis decision to limit the celebration of the Tridentine Latin Mass in parish churches and require prior permission from the diocesan bishop if a priest wishes to use the pre-Vatican II Latin Mass (see below).

The Latin Masses have been celebrated at St. Anne’s in the southern and central part of the county and at St. Mary’s and St. Margaret’s in the northern part of the county.

The Masses at St. Anne’s, a personal parish of the diocese entrusted to the priests of the Fraternity of St. Peter, will continue without change with the permission of Bishop McElroy.

The Masses at St. Mary’s and St. Margaret’s, both of which are territorial parishes, will be discontinued for now and efforts are underway, working with the faithful who attend those Masses, to find a non-parochial location in North County that could meet their needs. A new location will be announced as soon as arrangements can be made.
