Parish in Descanso closes temporarily after volunteer tests positive for Covid-19

SAN DIEGO, CA (July 17, 2020) – The Catholic parish in Descanso is closed through the end of July after a woman who volunteered there said she tested positive for Covid-19.

The volunteer helped to prepare the altar for Masses daily and on weekends at Our Lady of Light parish. Around 10 people attend Masses on weekdays, and between 20 to 30 on weekends.

The volunteer wore a mask and maintained social distance, as required of everybody who attended Mass.

Last Wednesday morning, July 15, she phoned the parish office to say that she had tested positive for Covid-19.  The pastor, Father Enrique Fuentes, immediately contacted any parishioners who may have come in contact with the volunteer, particularly fellow servers and sacristans, and suggested they self-quarantine and get tested. And he immediately closed the parish through the end of the month for deep cleaning.

Father Fuentes, who does not have any symptoms, was tested today and is awaiting results.
