Samoan Community

Three individuals stand next to a Samoan Catholic Community banner, wearing colorful shirts and necklaces. They are smiling in a bright room with a window and posters in the background.

Who We Are

About one in five people is Catholic in Samoa. In the San Diego region, they have an active presence. They are clustered at St. Rita’s Parish, in San Diego, and Mission San Luis Rey Parish, in Oceanside.

Samoan members take an active role at diocesan events, such as the Pentecost All Peoples Mass.

The St. Rita’s Samoan community has 40 to 60 members who are active. They have been part of the diocesan cultural communities since 2017.

The community organized in 1983 at that parish, which included forming a Samoan Catholic Choir. Today, the choir remains strong, singing every month on the fourth Sunday, at the 8 and 10 a.m. Masses.
