SAN DIEGO, Sept. 16, 2019 – San Diego Catholic Bishop Robert McElroy issued this statement today:
Today in Los Angeles, administrators of the Independent Victims Program and its Independent Oversight Committee announced that they have launched a website that victims of child sexual abuse by priests of the Diocese of San Diego and five other (arch)dioceses in California can use to file claims for compensation.
The website is www.CaliforniaDiocesesICP.com, with information in English, Spanish and Vietnamese.
This is a necessary step to help victims receive the recognition they deserve and the material support they need. It also continues our work to confront the grave sins committed by individual priests and the failure of the Church to protect children and young people.
This program will be funded from diocesan and insurance funds. No parish funds will be used, nor will donations from the Annual Catholic Appeal be used.
The other (arch)dioceses participating in this program are Los Angeles, Fresno, San Bernardino, Orange and Sacramento.
We must always keep victims of sexual abuse by priests in our prayers. These sinful crimes committed against the Children of God entrusted to our care are abhorrent. They must never happen again.
