Who We Are
The Vietnamese Catholic Community has had a significant presence in the Diocese of San Diego for decades. The community is active at five parishes — Good Shepherd, Holy Spirit, Holy Family, and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in San Diego, and St. Thomas More in Oceanside.
These parishes also have chapters of the Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Movement, which dates back to 1929 in Vietnam. This program, for youth ages 7 to 17, empowers members to spread the Gospel and to engage in charitable service.
The community celebrates an annual Martyrs Procession and Mass in the fall to commemorate the sacrifices of the many Catholics martyred for their faith in Vietnam during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, but especially the 117 martyrs canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1988.
Community members participate in diocesan events year-round, including the annual Pentecost All Peoples Mass and the San Diego Walk for Life.
