Month of the Rosary
Special Year for Faithful
The rosary grew out of an ancient Christian practice of counting prayers with a string of beads, and was shaped over centuries by monks, Dominican preaching, and popes. Today, the rosary is a powerful prayer that unites the Church, combats moral evils, and draws the faithful into the mysteries of salvation.
In 1571, Pope Pius V established Oct. 7 as the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. It was to be a day for the faithful to give thanks to the Blessed Virgin Mary, who had been invoked through the rosary, at a moment of great peril for Christians.
Successive popes, especially Leo XIII, consecrated the entire month to the rosary, calling it to be prayed in private and public. In 2025, Pope Leo XIV asked Catholics to pray the rosary each day in October for peace, especially in Gaza and Ukraine.
The rosary consists of a series of prayers arranged in four‑decade cycles. Each decade contains an “Our Father,” ten “Hail Marys,” and a concluding “Glory Be,” while the whole devotion is framed by an opening “Our Father,” the Apostles’ “Creed,” and a closing prayer such as the “Hail, Holy Queen.”
