(SAN DIEGO, Nov. 19, 2021) – Bishop Robert McElroy, who heads the Catholic Diocese of San Diego, announced today that he will enter the hospital next week for coronary bypass surgery. It is a scheduled procedure. Bishop McElroy is not considered an emergency patient. The surgery is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 22. He is expected to make a full recovery.
In a letter to the diocese’s priests, Bishop McElroy, 67, said he and his doctors began considering possible surgery after receiving the results of medical tests last summer. He plans to return to work after the holidays.
“I have great confidence in the medical staff who will perform this surgery. Typically, these patients can return to work in about four weeks,” Bishop McElroy said in his letter to priests. “Of course, God will be in charge of all of this.”
