This means that the care for immigrants and refugees is part of the same teaching that requires us to protect the most vulnerable, especially unborn children, the elderly and the infirm. Cardinal McElroy to lead Archdiocese of Washington
On Jan. 6, Pope Francis appointed Cardinal Robert W. McElroy, Bishop of San Diego, to be the new Archbishop of Washington, DC, starting in March.

Pope Francis elevated the Bishop of San Diego to the College of Cardinals in May of 2022. On March 11, 2025, he will be installed as the Archbishop of Washington.
