The marriage catechumenate is a new way of thinking about marriage prep. It is a holistic, lifelong Catholic formation model for marriage that extends preparation before, during, and after the sacrament, aiming to integrate couples into the community, deepen their faith, and provide ongoing accompaniment. Inspired by the journey of a catechumen in the Catholic Church and formalized by the Vatican’s “Catechumenal Pathways for Married Life,” it emphasizes discipleship and evangelization through stages like proximate preparation, final preparation, and post-sacramental accompaniment, often facilitated by mentor couples and parish involvement.
In other words, marriage prep isn’t just a series of boxes to check off and documents to gather!
